It seems hard to believe, but we're already into the membership renewal season. The overwhelming majority of us will still be members on April 1. For those of you who mean to renew but put it off too long, I'll remind you how easy it is to go to the American Mensa Web site, www.us.mensa.org, and follow the "Renew Your Membership" icon that is prominent on the homepage. Annual dues remain at $52, and $35 for additional family members. I've always liked to use the multiyear plans that reduce the cost further.
Many of us are in Mensa families and have more than one renewal to worry about, want to make sure we get the discounts we deserve, and put it all on one credit card charge. No problem! Just call the national office, (817) 607-0060, x199. The helpful staff will take care of you. That goes for those of you who do not have easy Internet access also--let them help you.
If this year were typical, on April 1 our region alone would be down about 1,200 members from the day before. That is so painful for those of us who remain. As many as half of those who lapse do manage to renew during the year. Of course, after reading my column, all of you will be getting your renewals in on time this year.
It's those who decide to truly lapse their memberships that I'm really concerned about. I understand that circumstances change in people's lives, but most members lapse because of a lack of connection to the group. For those of you who are thinking about whether or not to renew, you still have a couple of months to give Mensa a chance. If you have a specific problem, your Loc Sec or any other group officer may be able to help you, or would at least like to know what's bothering you. Try an event that you haven't attended; you might just find that spark, or meet a new person that will make your membership worth keeping.
